Prepaid iPhone in a Nutshell
After spending far too many hours trying to set up pre-paid iPhone directly with AT&T, I decided to take matters into my own hands this evening. Instead of trying to connect my newly provisioned AT&T account, I iSigned up using iTunes and entered 999-99-9999 as my social security number (as recommended by one of the more clueful AT&T people).
Of course, this failed the credit check and I was offered the prepaid plan. I selected it, agreed to the terms, and pretty much 1-2-3, I was put into the activation queue. At this time, I'm getting the "Your activation requires additional time to complete"/"You will receive an email confirmation", but my iBrick has taken some major steps forward in its uselessness.
It LIVES! Update and advice here

I received and e-mail from AT&T telling that they need more information.
I called AT&T and said that i want a prepaid account, they told me to goto to AT&T store and get an pick your plan gophone number. i went back to home and tried activate the iphone again, didn't receive the option for a preparid acount the i tried the 999 SSN again and i received the same message: we need more time to process your application, then i received the e-mail telling me that AT&T needs more information. I called AT&T tell then that i went to an store and got a prepaid number then they activated my IPhone.
Hint: ask then to put the IPhone Data bundle in your account because the plan they put me they charge 10 USD per megabyte. with a few minutos of internet usage i spend almost 25 USD, i called AT&T (611) and change the plan to include IPhone data bundle but this will start only on the next billing period, until then must pay 10 USD per megabyte.
when does the option for prepaid come up? is it before or after the "Review your information screen" where you click submit?

Perhaps the pay ahead method will work ... ATT requires no more than 40 per cent off grid usage per month for long term contracted clients. We need to know more about those consequences for off ATT grid users.
